How much Australian households save by switching to Skipper

by Skipper Team
As Skipper, our mission is to make zero-waste easy and accessible to all. Whilst we don't strive to be the cheapest product on shelves, our goal is to provide quality products at an affordable price.

Why do we care about affordability?

1. We are currently experiencing a cost-of-living crisis, with elevated levels of inflation since 2020.

2. Our products help households eliminate waste. The more households that can afford us, the stronger impact we make in our communities, and the environment.

Total Annual Spend: Popular brands vs Skipper

When we compare Skipper to other quality brands across lower and higher price points, we find the average Australian household saves between $73 (or 12%) to a whopping $537 (or 51%) every year by making the switch.

How we calculate annual savings

The below outlines the underlying principles of our methodology:

We compare prices of quality or sustainability-focused brands, often retailed in major supermarkets (Coles & Woolworths). Specific brands in this example include Thankyou, Sukin, QV, CeraVe, Go-To Skincare, Earth's Choice, Ecostore, Finish and Koh.

• For each product category, we find lower and higher price points so we are covering a broad range of options most frequently purchased by Australian households.

We do not compare against brands owned by Coles or Woolworths, nor other budget brands such as Palmolive, Radox, Ajax, Pine O Clean, Radiant to name a few. We do this respectfully, and compare ourselves only against brands that we believe focus on health and sustainability.

• For hand, body and face wash, we compare prices against traditional gel-based products. Our products are foam-based, and are consumed faster than gels. For the most accurate comparison, we factor this in by assuming our foam products are consumed 1.5 - 2x faster than gel. This of course reduces the calculated savings, but hey, we're being honest.

• We assume the average Australian household contains 2.5 people, as confirmed by the latest census study in 2021 by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Price Comparison Summary

Last Updated: August 2024

The following prices were obtained from Coles & Woolworths, or directly from a brands online store if not found in retailers.

At Skipper, we offer a refill incentive when you buy refills in bulk. For refills only:

 Spend $100, Get 10% off
• Spend $200, Get 20% off

The majority of Skippers purchase refills at 10% off, as they purchase every ~6 months and spend over $100 across all of their products. We have used this 10% off pricing in our comparison.

Other core assumptions and consumption data

Since 2021 we have conducted surveys across hundreds of thousands of households in Australia. We've pooled together this data to estimate that the average Australian household has:

3 sinks: each with a hand soap bottle
2 bathrooms: each with a body wash and face wash bottle
1 kitchen: featuring 1 multi-surface spray bottle
2 toilets

We've also aggregated average consumption data across Australian households as follows:

Hand Wash: 500ml bottle every 4 months per sink
Body Wash: 500ml bottle every 2 months per bathroom
Face Wash: 150ml bottle every 3 months per bathroom
Multi-surface Cleaner: 500ml bottle every 2 months
Dishwasher Tablets: 5 tablets / cycles per week (25% of households do not have a dishwasher)
Laundry Detergent: 5 loads per week
Toilet Cleaner: used once a week per toilet

Conclusion

As we said at the start, our mission is to make zero-waste easy and accessible to all, and that starts with affordable products.

We don't expect to be the cheapest option, and we know we never will be.

Instead, we focus on producing high quality products, and we invest proceeds into tackling the war on waste.

As our mantra goes: Our products skip the waste, our proceeds tackle the war on waste, and our policy advocacy will prevent future waste.

By supporting Skipper, you're not just consuming responsibly and affordably, you're turning your every day habits into a force for good.
